AEO vs GEO vs SEO: what is the difference?
SEO gets your pages ranked in search results; AEO gets your content chosen as the answer; GEO (generative engine optimization) is a near-synonym focused on generative AI tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini. The terms overlap heavily, and the industry has not settled on one name.
For a business the practical difference is small. The same foundations serve all three: pages search engines can crawl, clear answers, and signals that you are trustworthy. What changes is the goal: a citation or recommendation inside an answer, not only a blue link. Devmenta treats AEO and GEO as one service built on top of solid SEO.
- SEO (search engine optimization): ranking web pages in Google and Bing results so people click through
- AEO (answer engine optimization): being the source an engine uses for a direct answer, from featured snippets and voice assistants to AI Overviews and chatbots
- GEO (generative engine optimization): being mentioned, cited or recommended inside AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot
How do AI answer engines choose their sources?
Most AI answers that cite sources work in two steps: the engine searches an index for relevant pages, then a language model reads the top results and writes an answer, citing some of them. If your page is not in the index, or not among the results retrieved, it cannot be cited.
Models also carry background knowledge from their training data, which is why brands mentioned widely across the web can come up even when no search runs. You cannot edit training data, but consistent, widespread mentions make it more likely a model knows who you are.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: built on Google's own search index. Google says there are no extra technical requirements: a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
- ChatGPT search: OpenAI says it uses third-party search providers, of which Microsoft Bing is the best known, alongside its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. Bing indexing matters more than many site owners realize.
- Microsoft Copilot: grounded in Bing search results.
- Perplexity: runs its own crawler, PerplexityBot, and shows its sources prominently in every answer.
- Gemini: uses Google Search to ground answers when it looks things up on the web.
What kind of content do AI engines quote?
AI engines tend to quote passages that answer a question clearly in a few sentences, come from a source that looks trustworthy, and agree with what other sources say. No engine publishes its full criteria, so treat the points below as observed patterns, not rules.
This is why Devmenta's own pages repeat the brand name in key sentences. A line such as "Devmenta's plans start at $399 a month" still makes sense when an engine lifts it out of the page; "our plans start at $399" does not.
- A direct answer in the first one or two sentences under a question-style heading
- Specific facts such as prices, steps, locations and names, rather than marketing language
- Sentences that make sense on their own, including your brand name
- Pages that look current, with a visible date and a named author or company
- Brands described the same way on their own site, directories, review platforms and press
- Comparison, pricing and how-to content that matches the way people phrase buying questions
What is the practical AEO checklist?
Start with access and indexing, then make every important page answer-first and machine-readable, then build your reputation beyond your own site. Most of this is ordinary good SEO done thoroughly.
If you only have time for three things this month, make them Bing indexing, a robots.txt and firewall check, and rewriting your five most important service pages answer-first.
- Get indexed in Google and Bing: verify the site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit sitemaps, and consider IndexNow, which Bing supports, for faster discovery of new pages.
- Let AI search crawlers in: check robots.txt and any firewall or CDN bot-blocking for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Bingbot. OpenAI's GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (search) are separate, so you can block one and allow the other.
- Write answer-first copy: open each section with a one- or two-sentence answer, then add detail.
- Add FAQs in the words buyers use, with 40–80 word answers that stand on their own.
- Add structured data (JSON-LD): Organization or LocalBusiness, Service, Product, Article and FAQPage markup that matches the visible content.
- Keep your entity consistent: the same business name, address, phone, description and logo on your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and social profiles, linked through sameAs in your schema.
- Earn third-party mentions: reviews on Google and industry directories, guest articles, podcast appearances, partner pages and genuine discussion in forums.
- Consider an llms.txt file: a proposed plain-text map of your key pages for language models (see the caveats below).
- Keep key content in the HTML: not hidden behind logins, scripts that fail to render or tabs that never load.
Which AEO tactics are unproven?
Several popular AEO tactics are unproven. Put most of your effort into what search and AI companies have confirmed (crawl access, indexing, helpful content and reputation) and treat the rest as cheap experiments.
- llms.txt: proposed in 2024 as a standard way to point language models at your key content. Google representatives have said Google Search does not use it, and no major AI search engine has confirmed relying on it. It takes about an hour to create, so Devmenta adds one as low-cost insurance, not as a ranking lever.
- FAQ rich results: since 2023 Google has shown FAQ rich results mainly for well-known government and health sites. FAQPage markup still helps machines parse questions and answers, but most sites will not get the visual snippet.
- Google-Extended: this robots.txt token controls whether your content is used for some Gemini purposes. Google says it does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search; AI Overviews follow normal Search controls.
- Schema as a magic switch: structured data helps engines understand a page, but there is no public evidence that markup alone makes an AI engine cite you.
- AI hacks: hidden prompts, keyword-stuffed Q&A pages and mass-generated articles risk spam penalties and rarely earn citations.
- Guaranteed AI placement: nobody controls what an AI engine says, so anyone guaranteeing a ChatGPT recommendation is overselling.
How do you measure AEO results?
Measure AEO with a mix of referral data, search data and manual prompt checks. No single dashboard shows your full AI visibility yet, so track trends rather than exact numbers.
Expect small numbers at first. For most small businesses, AI referrals are still a small slice of total traffic, but those visitors can arrive further along in their decision, so judge them on enquiries rather than volume.
- AI referrals in GA4: watch sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. ChatGPT often adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it shows.
- Google Search Console: AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks and impressions are counted in the overall Performance report rather than shown separately, so watch question-style queries and impressions.
- Bing Webmaster Tools: confirms your pages are in Bing's index, which matters for Copilot and ChatGPT search.
- Prompt tracking: keep a fixed list of 20–50 questions your buyers ask, run them monthly in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google, and record whether you are mentioned, cited or linked.
- Lead attribution: add an "AI assistant" option to the "How did you hear about us?" question on forms and calls.
- Third-party trackers: AI-visibility tools exist, but their prompt samples vary, so use them for direction rather than precision.
How long does AEO take to work?
Technical fixes can show up in AI answers within weeks of your pages being recrawled; reputation work usually takes three to six months or longer. In competitive categories, expect a longer run.
AI models' built-in knowledge is refreshed on their makers' release schedules, which no website owner controls. That is one reason live retrieval, meaning being indexed and quotable today, is where most practical AEO effort should go.
- Weeks 1–4: crawler access, indexing in Google and Bing, structured data, entity cleanup and llms.txt
- Months 1–3: rewrite key pages answer-first, add FAQs and comparison content, start prompt tracking
- Months 3–6 and beyond: reviews, directory listings, earned mentions and content that other sites cite
How does Devmenta do AEO?
Devmenta's AEO and GEO service covers structured data (JSON-LD), FAQ content, llms.txt, entity consistency and AI-crawler access, built on top of technical SEO, so brands are easier for Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot to cite.
For Fine Art Production, a luxury wedding photography and cinema studio, Devmenta built a site with venue pages and a full SEO and AEO implementation. No one can promise that an engine will recommend you, but Devmenta can make sure nothing technical is stopping it. Plans start at $399 a month; see pricing or ask us to review your site.
